Apple crumble is a delicious dessert, perfect to kick off fall and provides a way to use up all those apples from apple picking!  This melt-in-your-mouth dish consists of baked apples with a crumbly topping.  Here’s a basic recipe for making apple crumble:

Ingredients:

For the Filling:

  • 4-6 apples (such as Granny Smith or Braeburn), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice (to prevent browning)

For the Crumble Topping:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg (if using), and lemon juice. Toss the apples until they are well coated with the sugar and spices. Transfer the apple mixture to a baking dish or individual ramekins.
  3. In another mixing bowl, make the crumble topping. Combine the all-purpose flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, and salt. Add the cold, diced butter to the dry mixture.
  4. Use your fingers or a pastry cutter to work the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. You want some larger and some smaller crumbs for texture.
  5. Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apple mixture in the baking dish or ramekins.
  6. Place the dish or ramekins on a baking sheet (to catch any drips) and bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown, and the apples are tender and bubbling.
  7. Remove the apple crumble from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving. It’s often enjoyed warm and can be served plain or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.

Enjoy your homemade apple crumble! You can also customize it by adding other fruits, like berries or pears, or by incorporating nuts or spices according to your taste.
